KUMBESWARAN TEMPLE HISTORY

Kumbeswarar Temple, believed to be more than 2000 years old, is located in the heart of the temple town, Kumbakonam. This is the place shown by Lord Shiva to Lord Brahma to restart the creation after the Maha Pralayam. The lingam is made of sand and believed to be swayambu (Self Manifested) in nature.

This temple has got a massive structure and is one of the biggest temples in India. The temple complex is spread over a sprawling space of more than 31,000 sq.ft with 4 entrances on all the 4 directions.

The name of the town “ Kumbakonam” itself is believed to have been derived from this temple name only.

SIGNIFICANCE OF KUMBESWARAN TEMPLE :

Lord Shiva in this temple is Swayambu murthy. The Base of Lingam is broad at the bottom and narrow as a needle point at the top.
This temple is considered one of the shrines of the 275 Padal Petra Sthalams of Lord Siva.One can find it glorified in the early mythological Tevaram poems/Hymns written and sung by the famed Appar and Sambandhar in their verses in praise of this Lord.

Based on the philosophy of “ world means Father and Mother” the prahara structure covers both Shiva and Parvathy shrines. This is a unique feature of this temple.
